The Importance of Maintaining the Equine Dentition

by Hayley Warren Equine Dental Technician

Throughout a horses life, the teeth are constantly erupting from the reserve crown below the gum line, until there is no tooth left to erupt and the tooth 'pockets out' and comes to the end of it's useful life. A comfortable mouth free from restriction and pain can will greatly improve the quality of your horses' life.

No teeth, no horse!

Uneven wear of your horses' teeth can cause hooks, ramps and sharp edges and points which can cause discomfort and even pain, which will inevitably affect the way that your horse reacts when ridden and asked to work on a bit. Bi-annual attention from an equine dental practitioner is vital to ensure that the teeth wear evenly and that any sources of discomfort are removed. A regular check up can also help to prevent serious problems from developing, as the earlier the problems are spotted, the better the chances of successful treatment by an equine dental practitioner or veterinarian.
